Clean & Sober Fun

Clean and Sober Fun!

Today I’m feeling a little tired and mellow.  I had a great time at a huge concert last night, got in very late, due to having to drive so far and drop my beautiful daughter off and also my adorable friend.

But it felt so good to be out and about, joining the human race again. I don’t really like such large – super spreader- gatherings, over thirty thousand people! But it was great music and fun with my girls. My big issue is that my friend, a sponsee, and I were the only ones there not drinking.  It looked to me like EVERYONE was drinking! Of course, there was also plenty of pot smell as well, it wouldn’t be a concert without it right? Lol

While I was walking to find a restroom through the sea of people, I came upon two very young security guards talking to two young girls who were drinking alcohol and their conversation went like this. “So, you’re not old enough to drink? How did you get that drink then?”  She said, “fake I.D.”, he said, “that’s cool, can you hook me up with one?” ha!

It took a very long time to get out of this very overcrowded event, but what worried me was all the drunk and stoned drivers all around me.  Thank God we got out safe and made it home safely.  I feel like an old lady, which I am, talking about getting home safely, but there is much to be said for that.  There was/is a fire raging in the mountain pass we had to drive over. There was a couple of major accidents on the freeway backing up the freeway for miles, it was slow going in grid lock traffic.

There is much to be said for taking good care of ourselves and not having to do as the whole crowd does. I’m not gonna say that staying clean and sober in these situations are always so easy. But it feels good to be a person who makes healthier, wiser choices. They said the cost of one beer there was twelve dollars, but for me, it would have been a lot more costlier.  It would cost me everything.

I still know that one is too many and a thousand never enough. And I’ve been clean long enough and gone to enough events to know that I have an overall much better experience when I am stone cold sober and totally present for the event.  I get so much more out of it and wake the next day with good memories and no regrets.

I would encourage anyone who is thinking of going into the lion’s den for a good time to take another clean and sober friend with them.  To pray up and make sure your program is in order.  Make sure you are spiritually fit to endure the enticement the excitement and all the free offers.  Believe me, that happens more than you know, because misery does indeed love company.

I also encourage everyone to get out and have fun, enjoy life and live life.  Just because we do not drink, or use does not mean we have to sit home bored and being old fuddy duddy’s. Enjoy your music, your entertainment choices, pro games, plays, Vegas shows and all sorts of fun things to do.

It is going to officially be summer in about a week and the BBQ’s have already been heating up.  Families and friends are enjoying each other, camping, parties and get togethers.  With the Forth of July coming soon, you can expect more and more BBQ’s and outings.  The concert I went to last night was outside, in an amphitheater, and it was a very nice night, with a big glowing moon that lit the whole venue up! We were all in shorts and tank-tops, enjoying a summer evening outdoors with great music and a whole lot of fun people. My idea of living the life.

As long as we are spiritually fit and solid in our recovery we can enjoy events same as anyone else.  I hope you all have a fun, safe, sane and sober summer.

Question of the Week: Are you able to have clean and sober fun? How do you get ready for it?
