Being There

Being There

A lot happens in a week, both good and bad.  This last week, I finally got a new floor in my bedroom, yay. But with it comes a lot of work and mess.  But it is a good thing and I’m grateful for my awesome grandsons and son who were there for me and got it done.

Saturday, I got a text from my niece to call her, she is the only surviving child of my sister that I was so close to, but my sister passed away in 1997, so I have tried to be there for niece wherever she may need me, which isn’t often.  She said her husband had a stroke and over the next couple of days the news got worse. He has a cancerous tumor and surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. It is an eight-hour drive, but I will be there. I’m leaving now.

We have had so much loss in our family but this one is a complete surprise.  Those two have been together since before I got clean, about 38 years now. They were young when they met and fell in love and have stayed together and raised three awesome kids.  I love them all so much.  My nephew in law has always been very good to us, very kind to my husband. They are bonded.  We are so broken hearted.

This is a horrible situation and so sad, one that we have been through before.  Still, we do not have to use over it.  I will stay clean through this tragedy and be at my niece’s side.  I believe that is why I am clean. To be here for people when they go through hard times. It is my honor to be here for them, it is my purpose. I could not do it if I was using, I would be all about me and staying drunk and loaded.  Probably get the Poor Me’s and try to use their pain for my selfish gain, to my sympathetic benefit.  I know because I’ve done it.

I don’t have to behave like that anymore, thank God. I think being there for our loved ones in their time of need is a high calling and a privilege. I might not be able to fix it, or heal him, but I can just be there.

Question of the Week:  Have you “been there” for someone else lately?
