Being of Service

Being of Service - Peanut Butter Runner

Blog for May 26th, 2025

First, thank you for your service to anyone who has served or is serving in the military.  My gratitude and pride are truly genuine for you all. My father, uncles, nephews, friends and many other men and women I know have served as well.  Without their sacrifice and commitment to our country I doubt I would be sitting here writing with freedom of speech and the luxury of pursuing my own path in life, again, thank you to you all.

Next, I am also honored to be of service in a different kind of way.  It’s not putting my life on the line, just my time, feelings, efforts and talents.  With love and care, I have humbly served my fellowship, family, church and community.  Actually, I just want to focus on the service within the fellowship.  The fellowship of Narcotics Anonymous.  For me, it has been a long and constant thread of my recovery for all these forty years.  I had two weeks clean when I first began and I am still of service to NA.

I can tell you one thing, service will keep you clean and humble! Maybe that’s two things. But I’ve also seen it get people loaded and chase them away from the program. It can indeed require thick skin and a strong program and of course, a reliance on God like no other.  Yet, when your heart is in the right place, it is a huge blessing to your personal program, to yourself. Having your heart in the right place means, you are being of service to help better carry the message to the still suffering addicts. This is a great and wonderful purpose, for us all.

And this is what has driven me all these years and keeps me coming back to service commitments, no matter what. I am, however, ready to scale back and let the young’uns serve more, so they too can stay clean and grow in their recovery. It has brought me years of joy, love, fear, apprehension and powerlessness galore.  It has taught me to trust my God, to let the BS go and to work my own steps.

So, if you want to grow spiritually and help others, service is the way, just be sure you are staying close to your HP and keeping your heart in the right place.

As we remember the ones who have served and lost their lives for our freedom, I pray you all have a safe and sane day off for this remembrance, and perhaps, we can all serve others, maybe a neighbor, friend, stranger, family member. God bless to you all and have a good week.

Question of the Week:  Are you of service to addicts?
