A silver lining is a sign of hope or a positive aspect in an otherwise negative situation. The phrase is often seen as part of the proverb Every cloud has a silver lining, meaning that there’s hope or something good to be found in every bad situation.
Silver Linings
OK, it wasn’t the worst week, but I’ve certainly had better. As with most weeks, most days, there is good and bad, ups and downs. It has been raining a lot this winter and it too has it’s good along with the bad- the flooding of homes and streets, but it also has a silver lining. We are getting out of the deep drought we’ve been in, and the Spring flowers will be amazing. But on a personal level, the ups and downs of this week have been very interesting if not challenging. Friday (the 13th) especially.
I woke up too early, not enough sleep. However, it’s a blessing that I did, I can certainly see the silver lining in my waking too early that day. Because I settled in with my tea and notebook to write, then I heard a big bang. I went to check it out and our water heater had sprung a leak. I quickly grabbed some stuff to get it out of the way, water was spraying everywhere. I ran to wake up my husband to come turn the water off. By the time that all happened the water was up to my ankles in the dining room and washroom. I kept moving stuff and trying to soak up water with towels, mops and sweeping it out the door with a broom.
We immediately went into action, living in the solution. Living in the solution is another silver lining that I have learned in recovery. So, I was putting stuff outside, cleaning up the water and saving items I cared about as fast and as best I could, but I do have a bad back and this was no easy task, but, It had to be done.
Another silver lining was the fact we could just take off and go buy a new hot water heater. I am so grateful we can do that. This is not the first calamity to befall us as homeowners, in fact this is our third water heater since we have lived in this house, over forty years now. So, we have learned our lessons and therefore that whole area is tiled in case of flooding, and we keep money in savings for just such emergencies.
I am grateful for our oldest grandson, soon to be a doctor, but he took time out of his busy day to come help us install the new water heater. He is truly a silver lining in this fiasco, but that’s no surprise, he has been a blessing to us since the day he was born. We even had another friend bring lunch over to us all. We are blessed.

While all this was going on, I wasn’t feeling very well, I was ill for about three days. Again, I am grateful for a safe, warm, cozy house to hole up in and get well. It was another silver lining that I was home and had some remedies here to take. I may be talking about my gratitude now, and living in the solution, but I haven’t really felt that way the entire time.
I look around at the damage and mess caused by the flood in the dinning room and wash room and get overwhelmed with despair about having more mess to clean up. That seems to be a never ending uphill battle for me and I’m at the end of my rope with it.
I look in the mirror and see a sick, old women who just doesn’t feel good and has zero energy to meet all these challenges that life throws at me. My husband and I read our meditations and one of them spoke about parenting. and I am faced with the horrible fact that our kids do not want much to do with me. Which is a heartbreak beyond words. The silver lining is this too shall pass. I will feel better, we will stay clean, and God will continue to bless us for our efforts.
Still, I know I am blessed, I can rise above the troubles, aches and pains and know that I am loved. I have my God, my recovery and my husband. All is well. And now, I have a brand-new water heater! 😊
Question of the Week: Have you found a silver lining lately?
Haute Tip: Find Your Silver Lining
When you change your outlook on life, you have the power to make real changes in other parts of your life too.
Each day, when you wake up, think of something that you are thankful for and makes you happy.
Immediately, your mind is filled with those thoughts of positivity that can help you stay on track to embrace all those silver lining moments of the day! In my opinion, we are all the masters of our own silver linings and finding ways to make them work well for us and our goals!
