The Long Freezing Winter

It’s really late, I’m really tired in the land of the midnight sun. But not right now. This time of year, they are pretty much on the same schedule as we are, half day, half night.  Therefore, it makes seeing the Northern Lights much easier.

More about that next week when the trip is complete. For now, I am just counting my blessings and being grateful for everything that has been provided for me. I am indeed missing my husband and a bit worried about his health. He didn’t sound good when I last spoke to him earlier today.

When I’m far away from home and loved ones that I can’t get to at the moment, then these are the times I lean into my faith, my prayers and my God even more. It is a time of learning to trust my Higher Power even more deeply. I think this is good for me, to continue to learn and grow and find deeper meaning in my faith.

In a country like this, where the winters can be so harsh and the rugged life of the tundra can be so ungiving, I can’t help but wonder about these people and how hearty and strong they are.  A true testament to the inner strength we must all possess if we ever need to tap into it.

It is late as I said and I’m tired, so this one is short, but just wait for next weeks. I am just thinking about the people here and the winter they are facing. I had a conversation with a lady here today that went like this: I asked, “how come you are on winter hours when this is just the second day of Fall?”  She looked at me funny and said, “for us, this begins our winter”.  Wow! Which means, their winter is about two or three seasons long.

No thank-you, nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live here. It is so beautiful, right now. The trees are turning different colors and signs of Fall are in the air, but it seems it will only last a couple of weeks! Wow!

We each have our own situations, climates and elements to deal with throughout the year, throughout our lives. I’m grateful I got to experience a small piece of the Alaskan territory.

Question of the Week: Do you think you could withstand thirty or more below zero in the winters?
