UNITY

Unity!

Yes, how about that? Unity! The state of being united or joined as a whole.

Synonyms of Unity: Consensus, harmony, identity, integrity, peace, solidarity, unification.

As I write this, it is “World Unity Day” in Narcotics Anonymous. It was broadcasted over zoom for a twenty-four-hour period and I think I watched/listened to about sixteen hours. It was so amazing and awe inspiring that it was hard not to stay tuned in. Addicts from all over the world, so many languages (yes, lots of interpreters). So many stories of hope, and life and coming out of addiction and horrible places. It brought hope, peace and love to my heart.

NA literature states that “an addict, any addict can find a new way to live”. And boy oh boy have they!  It is also heartwarming to know there is so much love going around amongst us in this world that seems to be at odds within itself constantly. How refreshing is that?  Yes, NA is a global program with members in over 140 countries around the world. Amazing huh.  That’s why the unity is so important, to connect with each other, on small meeting levels, area levels, regional levels, state levels and countries.  Which does indeed give us a state of being united and joined as a whole. Amazing.

The unity that is shared within the NA program is a great example of having consensus and solidarity.  It is a like-minded program that does cause a unification of its members, however, this does not by any means suggest that we all think the same, do the same and believe the same on any level. But we do come together with integrity to discuss, vote and decide how we can best serve the still suffering addict. And I love that. It’s unity as individuals.

I would like to discuss how this can be a loving, caring way to live with our family and friends. To be able to create safe, loving spaces in our homes and in our lives that unity becomes such an ordinary, normal way to be that we don’t even hardly notice that it’s happening.  Just like walking, talking, eating, doing all these normal things we do daily without thinking about it.  It becomes habit. It becomes a way of life, so much so that we come to just expect it. Wow, wouldn’t that be nice.

I believe if we are living with integrity and creating harmony then peace and unity will just naturally follow. If we can identify with one another and are allowed to have our own individuality yet come together in life’s big issues without losing our integrity, then we will naturally be living in unity and harmony.  Loving one another without expectations or fear.

I know it might sound like I’m talking about utopia or some fantasy world, but I think not, I believe it is possible for us all to live like this, in unity and love. I know there will always be differences and difficulties, but if we are unified, we will be able to deal with them much easier. And I know that for me, I have to totally rely on my Higher Power to help me stay in harmony, love and peace with others.

Question of the Week: Are you living in unity with your people?
