Buried Treasure
Throughout our lives, we meet a lot of different kinds of people. We start with our families, moms, dads, siblings, cousins, grandparents and aunts and uncles. With them comes a whole lot of variety. And then there’s the spouses of our blood relatives. Bringing with them new and different ideas, customs and traditions. Some of them we accept and even embrace, and some – not so much.
When we go to school and meet more new people; we experience the differences in other cultures and how they live and think in their lives. Some, we are attracted to and get to know them better. Maybe even adopting some of their personalities and ways of life. I know I have certainly done that throughout my lifetime. I’ve made friends or acquaintances from near and far and have learned about new kinds of food, games, drinks, and even- hugging. I didn’t know about the “heart to heart” hugging until I met a guy at an NA world convention from some island country. To this day I still do that. 😊
You just never know where you will find a treasure like that. But mostly, it’s the actual people who are the treasurers and when we begin to get closer and closer to someone, we find out more and more about them and put them in our hearts and they put us in theirs. It’s like with sponsoring in the program, we dig real deep in our steps and get to know each other at such a greater and more profound level than I ever would with a co-worker, school friend or church buddy.
There’s something about disclosing your deepest, darkest secrets, your genuine aspirations and desires to someone who loves and cares about you and your recovery. We share the hurts and pain that come with a life of addiction. Even the probable reasons we become addicted to drugs in the first place. A childhood of abuse, relationships that hurt our hearts to pieces and left us broken and helpless.
Many times, when I have dug deeper into that buried treasure, which is the heart and feelings of a friend, I am the one who is better for it. I am the one who finds a connection from the heart to heart. When I share my deepest fears and desires with my sponsor, we too connect deeper and deeper each time.
Just like when people dive into the ocean or dig into the earth to find buried treasures, we too have to go through the hard rock ground, the murky waters and dangers of the sea, until we can find and uncover the true treasure buried deep inside of us and also in our friends, sponsees and loved ones.
Every now and then in life, I have even had the rare opportunity to have strangers tell me of their deepest concerns, accomplishments or desires. Those are little nuggets along the way of life, when one soul reaches out and touches another. These are also treasures to be cherished.

One such time, I met a lady on an airplane when I was leaving Fairbanks Alaska and she and I hit it off so well that we are still staying in touch on a regular basis, she even sent me a book she wrote. Which I loved and it showed me deep into her heart. She is indeed a treasure. I just love her, and she is a blessing to me. Just a chance meeting, in fact, I had changed planes with a service man at the last minute. And the only seat was next to her on the emergency exit!
I’m sure I’ve more experiences than I can ever remember of chance meetings, of people who were just there for a brief time, for an important time. God designs these opportunities and it’s up to us to dig into them and find the treasurers within. I very much enjoy doing this, unless I’m too tired or sick, like in the hospital or doctor office. Still, all in all, I love talking to people and learning new things.

The deepest and most heartfelt buried treasure is in our spouse, our closest and dearest human connection which, for me, is a gift from my God. A most precious and cherished relationship where we continue to dig and dig and find all our treasures buried deep within both of us. I am still learning new things about my husband. For instance, about three days ago he told me of his great, great, great grandfather that came to this country in 1663, wow, that’s amazing.
But I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you about my most precious treasurer that I dig into daily when I read my Bible, when I pray and ask the Lord to show me His will for my life and give me the power to carry it out. When I continue to learn and get to know Him better and better through His Word. This is the best treasure of all, the only one that will last for all eternity, the rest will all pass away.
There are so many beautiful stories that my husband and I have and are still experiencing together that it would take up volumes to talk about. I am grateful and blessed for all of it. Buried treasurers? Yes, many, in fact, you could have one sitting right next to you right now.
Question of the Week: Have you been digging for buried treasurer?
