Living a Simple, Peaceful & Quiet Life
I was reading 1Timothy 2: 1-7 this week and came to the part where Paul is saying that it is God’s will for us to live in peace & quiet when at all possible. It reminded me of a sponsee of mine who shared in a meeting, many years ago that she was living a quiet and simple life. No more drama like when we are using and running amuck. No more getting arrested, going to jail, losing relationships, family angry and disappointed with us, just a simple and quiet life, and it is beautiful.
As my husband and I have aged, we are now in a position of just me and him, being here, in our home that he has helped to build and maintain the structure and I take care of the inside, the yard and pay the bills. We have a rhythm and we understand, for the most part, of who does what. We are in agreement on most things, the important things. Our faith, recovery, family and friends. We have created a safe, quiet and peaceful space for ourselves as we slip away from this life and towards the next.
Sitting here writing, I have on a beautiful, peaceful ambience, ( I get them on YouTube) of a Scottish living room with a fire going in the fireplace, a big glass window that looks out at a lake, small castle, rain, mountains with a little snow, as the music plays a mellow Scottish melody. It is beautiful, peaceful and gentle. It is raining here today also, and this ambience fits the occasion, I love it. Chills me right out.
Still, as much as I enjoy this, and I surely do, I also enjoy being with our kids and grandkids, friends, family, sponsees and going to meetings and church to get hugs. To socialize and share thoughts, ideas, experiences, strength and hope. Sharing the message of recovery and what my Higher Power has done for me, for us, is a joy and a privilege.
I am currently working on my twelfth step, again, for the umpteen time. But this time I’m taking a deeper dive into it, like I did the eleventh step for the last seven months. I love going in deeper to God’s will for me and the spiritual principles of these steps. One of them being, learning to live a quiet, simple and peaceful life, clean and in recovery, with my Love (my husband). My beautiful, amazing, kind husband.
It really doesn’t get any better than this. The only thing I’m lacking is getting organized with all our years of collecting stuff. We’re working on it. Some call it the Swedish Death Cleanse. LOL, that’s about right. I’ve been at it since I retired from my day job eight years ago! I still teach online and I love it, I’m grateful for my job. For the most part, it is also mellow and enjoyable. Once in a while I have a student that causes some stress, but we work through it. Thanks to the tools of the program.
As we work on our Swedish Death Cleanse and let go of years of accumulating stuff, it causes some sadness and yet my heart aches and rejoices at the same time for all the memories, what was and what will never be again. But, we know, it is time. As we sit here and enjoy our remaining, quiet, peaceful years together, still holding hands, loving each other forever, we know how blessed and assured we are of our place in the next life.
Our God has been so good to us, even the years before we got clean and started our road to recovery. He was always there, protecting, guiding and helping us at every turn. Trying to lead us away from the death and destruction that the life of using drugs was causing us.
Not to mention the fact that when we got together, we had six kids between us and then some, never a dull moment, never a quiet moment. Lots of family, friends and newcomers, in and out of our home, constantly. We welcomed them all. We loved them all.

One more thing I want to add, my Love and I are simple, easy people. We don’t live in a big, modern house, we live in a house as old as me, we live in a house of love. We don’t buy new cars every couple of years, we take care of what we have and stay debt free.
Our money is spent on presents for kids and grandkids, friends and such. Travel to see our kids and grandkids, conventions for recovery. We keep it simple and are grateful for what we have. I don’t buy designer clothes or bags. We do buy what we need, but it’s simple, easy stuff. We are fulfilled, I do believe, blessed for sure.
So yes, as we get to sit here together, calm, mellow, peaceful and quiet, we sit in gratitude and love. Knowing, and feeling the love that we have shared, with each other and with others, is always going to be here, for all eternity, as is God’s will, amen.
Question of the Week: Are you living a quiet, grateful, simple and peaceful life?
