You Got This!

I know this little slogan can get tiresome sometimes, but it does serve a good purpose at times. It’s not just a cliché, it is an

encouragement. At times, it’s also been used with sarcasm, to make fun of people.

There was a time when my son was so strung out and would tell us, “I got this”.  There was something said about “He’s a grown ass man and he’s got this”.  Of course, he did not have it. It was like a joke, but It’s never funny to watch our loved ones killing themselves.  He didn’t “got this”.

There are a lot of prideful people, including myself, that say “I got this”, trying to accomplish the impossible by ourselves. Like, keeping a family together when you are using and running amuck. Or when your work load is overwhelming and you don’t want anyone to think you are not capable and think less of you.

This is a very prideful thing, and it makes life a lot more difficult than it has to be. These days, I tend to ask for help more and more. I even let the water guy bring those big heavy jugs in the house. I ask store workers to lift something heavy for me, I ask tall men on the airplane to please hand me my overhead bag.  Because I don’t got this.  I get by with a little help from my friends and strangers!

You know that saying “pride comes before the fall”? Well, I’ve come to know this for a fact, Jack. I came to terms with asking for help when I first got clean. And let me tell you, that was really hard for me, you see I had one of those, “I don’t need nobody or anything from anyone, I will do it myself.”  Wow! What an egotistical attitude. Who do I think I am? I was trying to do what no human power can so easily do, but there is a power that could help me, and all I had to do was surrender.

Surrender to win they say, and that’s the truth. Let go and let God. For me, and so many others, there is no other way. The only way that “I got this” is by giving it to God.  He’s the one that has this, guides me and helps me through life’s ups and downs and believe me, there’s many.

I hope that you too are able to trust a Higher Power with your cares and worries in this life, that’s the only way to truly “got this”.
